  • Why Hire a Management Consultant?

Posted September 16, 2015 by Eden Lovejoy

Isn’t there an old story that those who can, do and those who can’t consult?  I’d like to turn that idea around.  Those who can, do, and those who can do really well sometimes realize they can have more impact on a greater number of people when they go out on their own and Expert Photoconsult!

There’s a lot of suspicion out there about consultants and whether there’s value in this type of investment.  Here’s the top 5 reasons you might want to consider hiring a consultant for your privately held business:

    1. Your family is tired of hearing about your day to day stresses, decisions and plans.  As a business owner, you often don’t have anyone to really hash ideas out with, and talking them through with a consultant can give you the clarity you are looking for.
    2. You’re too close! When we are up to our ears in the day to day operations of our business, you can’t see the forest for the trees.  A consultant brings an outside perspective and can help you see things in a new way.
    3. Management is a specialized skill. We don’t hesitate to hire a CPA or an attorney, but we think we can figure out management. . . after all, it’s just about getting things to work right, right?  Actually, management of business operations is a craft that is developed over time.  Why reinvent the wheel?
    4. Nobody has all the answers! You are great at what you do (if you weren’t you wouldn’t be in business!), but even the very best performers have coaches and subject matter experts they rely on to fine tune their skills.  Look for a consultant who has specific experience in the areas you find more challenging and add to your toolbox.
    5. It’s faster! Someone asked me once if I thought I could learn to fly a jet plane.  I’m sure I could, but it would take quite a bit of time, and for the trip I’m planning next week I think I’ll hire a specialist (a pilot). Bring in someone with experience to help you get where you want to go faster!
